WRITING IN FILM

Storytelling is a technique to communicate with your listeners/audience. How can you improve your techniques of storytelling? In this session, you will learn the craft of storytelling presented logically and mathematically. You will also learn how to analyse and develop your story so that it is told well – making your ‘journey’ in writing much easier. This session is not just for scriptwriters but for creators in general: producers, directors, actors, distributors and anyone who is interested in telling a good story.

Yasu Tanaka has worked as a Scriptwriter and Script Analyst in Hollywood and Japan for over 20 years. He started teaching Advanced Classes for Scriptwriting in Tokyo and Los Angeles since 2006. He has also been involved in consulting and training at MARZA Animation Planet Inc. in their efforts to produce their original animation feature since 2006.  In 2009, he started teaching Master Classes for Scriptwriting at FINAS, Malaysia. In 2010, Tanaka started a Film/TV production company, 42nd Pictures, with Bea Tanaka, his wife, to make TV/ Feature films for the domestic and international market.

LIGHTING WITH THE CONCEPTION OF PAINTING IN A MONGOLIAN TALE

Fu Jingsheng is not only an excellent cinematographer but also an accomplished painter, woodcut artist and comic artist. His philosophy of cinematography is strongly influenced by his art background. He will show examples from films that he has lensed which display his contemplative, lyrical and meditational approach towards telling visual stories that are similar to his paintings. Echoes of his style can be seen in the films of Zhang Yimou, particularly in The Road Home (1999).

 

Fu graduated from Beijing Film Academy’s Department of Cinematography and is currently a Professor at the College of Creative Media, Beijing Film Academy. With director Xie Fei, he has lensed 3 films: A Girl from Hunan (1986); A Mongolian Tale (1994) and Song of Tibet (1999). As director and cinematographer, he made the feature Agreed Not to Separate, which won Special Mention at the Los Angeles Film Festival. The film is listed among the 10 best films by Shanghai Film Festival Yongle Cup. He made a self-funded documentary, The Chiru (Tibetan Antelope) which won the Golden Ox Award for Best Short at the 2007 Oxford International Documentary Film Festival.

Ever wonder what film festival programmers look for when selecting films? Now is your chance! Learn how subject matter, film aesthetics, and the all-important 3-minute rule influence the screening destiny of a short film. All ages and film-making skill levels are welcome to this session.

​Dr. Alex Fischer specializes in film festival operation. His book, Sustainable Projections: Concepts in Film Festival Management (St Andrews Film Studies, 2012), is the culmination of over 20 years’ experience and analysis. Dr. Fischer is also an award-winning experimental short filmmaker and has worked on productions in Europe, Asia, North America and Australia. Currently Dr. Fischer is a Senior Lecturer at Multimedia University’s Faculty of Cinematic Arts, Iskandar Puteri.
